Cocles Beach

Its proximity to Puerto Viejo makes it the liveliest beach in the Southern Caribbean where surfers, tourists and locals gather under the sun rays. It is perfect for walking along the shore or along its trails, swimming in its blue waters, sunbathe, read a book, ride on horseback through its golden sands, or simply admire its amazing landscape.

Surf, is the king sport in Cocles Beach because of its well – known surfing spot “Beach Break” that delights the surf lovers and where you can watch them performing spectacular tricks on their surfboards.

Its coastal and marine area is protected by the Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge, which extends wild and lonely through kilometers under the shade of lush coconut trees and a dense forest. Here the Cocles and the Black River flow into the Caribbean Sea, leading to an important wetland which provides freshwater pools.

Opposite to the beach there is a small rocky island, where many birds come at sunset to spend the night and where the stories and legends of pirates speak of hidden treasures and spirits that guard them.

Cocles Beach, like many beaches in the southern Caribbean, has the Blue Ecological Flag award which rewards the quality of its waters and cleanliness of its environment. It also has a lifeguard program to ensure the safety of swimmers. It is an initiative promoted and managed by local tourism entrepreneurs and it is giving excellent results.

Among the tourist establishments along this beach you find eco – friendly resorts that work in a sustainable way. Some of them have the Certificate of Sustainability awarded by the Costa Rican Tourism Institute, and offer high quality services capable of meeting the needs of an ecological tourism that seeks for a jungle and beach vacation.
